The Joseph Clift account book contains Clift’s financial accounts for a variety of goods and services traded in Marshfield, Massachusetts, throughout the late 18th century. During the Revolutionary War, Clift recorded notes from several town meetings regarding the contribution of local men to the Continental Army.

Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester. In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander. Joseph Clift was born on June 22, 1736, the son of Deacon William Clift (d. 1750) and his wife Judith (d. 1782); he had 6 surviving siblings. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a captain of the local militia, and accompanied a regiment to Rhode Island. He and his wife, Mary, had at least one son, also named Joseph. He died in 1828.
